Your baby’s first year goes by in the blink of an eye. One moment they are tiny newborns curled up in your arms, and before you know it they are sitting up, laughing, clapping, crawling, and getting ready to celebrate their very first birthday.
Milestone and cake smash sessions are such a fun way to capture your baby’s growing personality during these special stages. At Crystal Anne Portraits, my in studio sessions are designed to be relaxed, playful, and stress free for both babies and parents.
When Should You Schedule a Milestone Session?
Milestone sessions are typically done around:
3 to 4 months when baby is pushing up and smiling
6 to 8 months when baby is sitting independently
9 to 10 months when baby is crawling or standing
1 year for a cake smash celebration
Every stage brings something completely different, and each one deserves to be documented.
One of my favorite stages is the sitter stage. Babies are full of personality at this age. They are usually smiling, giggling, clapping, and interacting more while still staying mostly in one place. It is truly the perfect age for timeless portraits.

Most cake smash sessions also include portraits before the cake portion begins. This gives us time to capture clean smiling portraits before things get messy and fun.
Parents are responsible for bringing the cake due to food allergies and dietary restrictions.
My Approach to Milestone Sessions
I keep milestone and cake smash sessions playful and low pressure. Babies have their own personalities and moods, and I always work around what makes them comfortable.
Some babies jump right into the cake while others are a little unsure at first. Both reactions are completely normal and adorable. Some of the sweetest images come from the curious expressions and tiny messy fingers.
The goal is not perfection. The goal is capturing your child exactly as they are during this stage of life.
