Fall Family Photos in Apex NC: What to Expect

Fall is one of my favorite times of year for family photos in Apex, NC. The temperatures finally start cooling down, the light is beautiful, and it’s the perfect time to update those family photos before the holidays.

It’s also one of my busiest times of the year!

If you’re thinking about booking fall family photos in Apex, Cary, or the surrounding Raleigh area, here’s what you can expect from your session with Crystal Anne Portraits.

When Should You Book Fall Family Photos?

Earlier than you might think!

October and November are some of the most popular months for outdoor family photography in the Triangle. Between changing leaves, cooler temperatures, school schedules, sports, and the holidays quickly approaching, weekend availability can disappear fast.

If you know you want updated family photos this fall, I recommend getting on the calendar as soon as possible.

What Time Are Fall Family Sessions?

For outdoor sessions, I love photographing families close to golden hour, when the sun is lower in the sky and we get that beautiful, warm light.

The exact session time changes throughout the fall as sunset gets earlier. By November, our session times can be quite a bit earlier than they are in September and October.

Don't worry about figuring that part out yourself. Once we choose your date and location, I'll help determine the best time for your session.

What Should We Wear?

This is probably one of the biggest questions I get!

You don't need everyone in matching outfits. In fact, I usually recommend coordinating colors instead of matching exactly.

For fall photos, think about warm neutrals, creams, browns, muted greens, rust, burgundy, denim, and soft earth tones. Layers and textures can also photograph beautifully.

Most importantly, choose clothing that feels like your family and that everyone is comfortable wearing.

What If My Kids Don't Cooperate?

Please don't stress about this!

Kids are kids. They might be shy at first. They might decide that sitting still is absolutely not happening that day. Someone may make a silly face at exactly the wrong moment.

That's okay.

I've been photographing families and children since 2011, and I don't expect little ones to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera for an entire session.

We'll get the traditional family photos, but some of my favorite images happen in between. Playing, laughing, cuddling, walking together and letting kids show off their personalities often creates the photos families end up loving the most.

Full Family Session or Fall Mini Session?

This year, I'm also offering a limited number of Fall Family Mini Sessions.

Mini sessions are perfect for families who want a quick update without committing to a full session. They are 15 minutes and include 7 professionally edited images.

If you have younger children, don't let the short session scare you. Sometimes 15 minutes is exactly what they need!

For families who want more variety, more time, multiple groupings, or a more relaxed experience, a full family session may be the better choice.

Where Do Fall Family Photos Take Place?

There are so many beautiful places for family photos around Apex, Cary, and Raleigh.

The location we choose depends on the look you want, the time of year, and what works best for your family. Some families love greenery and gardens, while others prefer an open field, a rustic setting, or something with a little more character.

I'll help you choose a location that works well with the style you're envisioning.

Ready for Fall Family Photos?

Fall always sneaks up on us faster than we expect. Before we know it, we're into Halloween, Thanksgiving, holiday cards and the end-of-year rush.

If family photos have been sitting on your to-do list, now is a great time to get them scheduled.

Crystal Anne Portraits is now booking fall family photography sessions in Apex, Cary, Raleigh and surrounding areas. Limited Fall Mini Sessions are also available.

I would love to photograph your family this fall!
